Calorie

 

A measure of energy.  There are actually THREE different calories.

cal The small calorie is the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of 1  of water by 1 Celsius.  This is equal to 4.184 Joules.
The international calorie is 1/860 watt-hours.

A kiloCalorie (1,000 calories) is still widely used as a measure of the energy content of food.  Many manufacturers and diet books incorrectly abbreviate this unit as "cal" on packaging.
