Acre

An area equivalent to 1 furlong in length by one chain in width.  Originally the area that could be ploughed by one man in one day with one horse on a single blade plough. 9,860 sq yards, or 0.4 hectares.

Hide

An archaic measure of land area.  It was an area of land (estimated at 60 to 120 acres depending on local soil quality) sufficient to support a family and its dependants.
